Pax2trax

That's all they're playing on the radio!

Pax2trax

The degradation of MTV is what happened to kids that were born after 2006. We weren't on our phones; I just started having a cell phone 6 years ago man! MTV kept kids entertained during the summer with the random Summer Pool parties where you randomly just peeked into what Dr. Dre and Snoop was up to, MTV Cribs, Teen Wolf, SILENT LIBRARY where some rock band has to get... Nipple clamps being pulled by a ferrari toy car and stay silent to get 4,000 bucks, whatever happened to The Rock Of Love, Nitro Circus where talented stunt guys do awesome jumps over lakes on mini motorcycles, Parental Control, actual live interviews from rockstars inside hotels that make you go, "Thanks, MTV. I actually have dreams of being a rockstar, and you just manifested it for me. Like, i can see it. Punk'd; do you know how AWESOME Celebrity Deathmatch would be... if it was still AROUND TODAY? But now, all we have is Ridiculousness. And Wildin Out, which basically teaches kids its funny to shit on people if you're not wearing anything name brand. IM GRATEFUL for the new Jersey Shore boots because that was my favorite show when I was like 10, but there was more to the show than us watching Snooki get hammered and fall over things, then having everyone in the house act like she's never been there before. I guess its because the internet is the main way people view TV, in a way? But there's a whole conglomerate of kids somewhere in some dirt pile town without a smart phone right now, with dinosaur computers, bored out of their skulls doing drugs. Because MTV isnt there.

legendary24_8

This is the number 1 driving point of society going into the gutter. This stuff becomes kids values if that’s all they take in. They usually idolize the rappers and try to be like them. Young girls looking up to Megan the Stallion and Cardi B, someone who sexualizes everything and a rapist. Not great role models for our children, but no one does anything and just lets it happen.

Bromogeeksual

Except not. Id say it's more the increasing wealth disparity and lack of access to things like Healthcare and mental services. People said Marilyn Manson was the downfal of society, he wasn't. If you raise your kids right they can understand the difference between art talking about sex and sexuality and can still make their own decisions. I love slutty rap and stuff like that but never hook up myself. Get outta here with blaming music and people that buck the norm .

TheAlbinoBaskerville

See this makes sense, just because you like a form of entertainment that might be objectifying, doesn't mean you should take it as something to replicate or even take it personally. But sadly, radical feminist are getting the most attention from media and would not agree with type of thinking.

blondecomet

Who the fuck cares. Society hates us women anyways and anything we wear, listen to, or participate in is scrutinized by either side. We can't do anything right in the eyes of society, so we'll just continue to do us and make us happy. Fuck the unobtainable standards.

phatguy1

You complain like a girl

TheAlbinoBaskerville

It's too bad then, because some radical feminists are the ones getting the most attention and are becoming the voices of what women want. For example, feminists like Anita believe that women shouldn't look sexually attractive in videogames. This is what some, if not most video games are leaning towards now. But you have other forms of entertainment that still objectify women such as music, but It seems like some women don't care, while others do, or in some cases, are aware that it's a problem but still dance to the music lol. So what's the majority?

blondecomet

I can't speak for anyone but myself. And you'll never learn the majority because this topic doesn't affect all women in every culture the same. Maybe men just need to stop being fucking weird about women and let us do/be us...for us, not them.

TheAlbinoBaskerville

That's true, we'll never come to a conclusion because there always seems to be different opinions on each topic and never one concrete answer. Culture definitely plays a role, guess I'm mostly thinking about western culture. "Maybe men just need to stop being fucking weird" What do you mean? I believe women's opinions and concerns should be important to look into, just like for men or anyone else. Men aren't the only ones being weird about these topics if people like Anita have a voice. Maybe I'm not understanding what you're saying, Would you explain more? If you don't mind me asking.

dreday42069

“Bight my lip and close my eyes, take me away to paradise.” I was in elementary school when Dookie dropped on cassette tape. I loved that shit, pun intended, but my lyrical comprehension was terrible so I had no idea what most of the songs meant.

zeemonster424

My 9 year old is into Greenday. A lot of the lyrics go over her head, and some songs I’m selective of... but turning on the top 40 radio station, it’s all so much worse.

This song was literally about all that

No_Astronaut7694

This isn't new though. When I was young, there was much innuendo in rock music. "I really love your peaches, wanna shake your tree", "Pour some sugar on me", "I wanna sex you up". The list is endless. I guess the main difference is that in the old days, it was innuendo and now it's blatant. These little kids will do a face palm when they get older and realize what they're singing. Until then, here's a good remix of Anaconda. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zJAz_ZQvRg

Kaneharo

Hell, even Louie, Louie was very dirty.

deskbeetle

I remember going to a college baseball game and between innings they played "Cocaine" by Clapton. It's not even using metaphors. Looked around to all the middle aged parents and their kids chilling to it.

ExaltedNonsense

Can you blame them though that songs a straight masterpiece

AllofaSuddenStory

I agree. The sex was always there but the modern song writers just got lazy

DrStatisk

There used to be stricter rules for what you could play on the radio too (depending on country and station owners as well), don’t forget that.

Nemaoac

I don't think it's quite pure laziness. I'm sure that's part of it, but I think people have also become desensitized to the innuendo. "Pour some sugar on me" was a bit provocative at the time, now that song's played in commercials. If you want to really shock people, they need explicit references nowadays. Bands that want to be edgy need to push things even further now, they need to try to do something that hasn't been done before.

hikeit233

Who’s that twitch girl with the cunnilingus on the couch song.

BirdsInTheNest

Nah, innuendo is still there, we’re all just old enough to understand it the first go around now.

AllofaSuddenStory

WAP is innuendo LOL

BirdsInTheNest

TIL WAP is the only song today.

NRMusicProject

When I was in a college English class, for some reason we were analyzing song lyrics. Got towards the end of the class, and the professor said, "we only have time for one more song. We can choose [whatever the songs were], and Baby Got Back." All the girls squealed at Baby Got Back, and begged for the song to be that one. At the end of the song, the professor asked about thoughts on the song, and every one of those girls who begged for the song to be played, and danced to it, were all raising hands and saying things like "I think this song is very sexist and demeaning to women, and shows real problems in our society." I had to point out how it's funny they're all saying it but were so excited about listening to it, and they all cracked up.

FacEthEmoOn

Lol and that song is supposed to be about body positivity and accepting your body. While simultaneously shaming people who dont fit his standard....

NolanVoid

For context though, at the time every "hot girl" in every movie had a flat pancake ass. Sir Mix-A-Lot is a knight for a reason: he saved us all from a culture that enshrines flat asses.

FacEthEmoOn

Yes I am aware, but I would not consider him a knight or at all responsible for shifting beauty standards. For the vast majority of human history that body type (flat) has not been considered attractive. He has nothing to do with it. Also some of the kindest, beautiful, most intelligent women I know are flat chested or flat bottomed. That song, while fun, is fucking disgusting. Yes I like butts, but I also love all sorts of body types and would be so ashamed to play that song around any woman regardless of their body type. A culture that shames anyone for their body is fucked, and that song is disgusting. Edit: spelling

NolanVoid

I bet you are a blast at parties.

Visited my parents last weekend and my 13yo sister was constantly singing something along the lines of "bouncing on that stick." She didn't even know what it meant. Not exactly words I wanted to hear out of her mouth

elmrsglu

When a song has a catchy beat, the lyrics are fucked up usually. Kids don’t listen to the lyrics so much nor do they know the meaning, ideally, but their parents should have them change to a different song.

hikeit233

But did you jam with us to lady gagas disco stick in 4th grade?

NigmaNoname

There's that famous vine of the young girl rapping Nicki Minaj's part from "Bang Bang," and she just kinda slurs over "ride his dick like a Harley" because she doesn't actually know what's being said there. I always found that to be a pretty charming representation of childhood.

lemonylol

I mean when I was that age I was listening to Magic Stick, Work It, and Get Low. Kids know man.

Kids don't really know. They can understand that something is "about sex," but they really don't know what any of it means.

Let the girls enjoy the music they enjoy.

CorneliaCursed

I'm all for letting live, but it is super uncomfortable to be around a 12 year singing about sex whether they know it or not.

dailybeddit2

I never understood people's obsession with criticizing little girls' taste in music. Like how a lot of people were infuriated when Justin Beiber was popular. How does it affect their lives in any way?

Revolutionary_Ad8161

Because in ten years when they finally learn how to read and write, the entire world has to listen to them bitch about how mad they are about being taken advantage of and objectified by the music industry, even though they were the stupid assholes supporting and funding this exact kind of music in the first place because they only cared about how it makes them *fEeL* and they actually never listened to the lyrics. Shaking your thonged-ass in the club to WAP and getting gangbanged to the tune of Disco Stick, and then going on social media and bitching about objectification of women in media, makes you hypocritical and disingenuous. Imagine if a bunch of guys made formal complaints and used Megan Trainor and Taylor Swift being dismissive of men’s whatever as points on their Collectible Victim Card, but then went home and listened to them religiously and fawned over them with their friends in private. It makes you a liar. This is why euphemisms in music are important, because it allows for possible other interpretations, has poetic license, and isn’t just crass recitation and delivery of obscenities. But because pop music has been getting objectively and significantly dumber for half a century, now all the songs are “snorting coke off cocks and fucking mad bitches I like shooting people and pussy, bang bang suck a dick and an asshole!” Whereas it could have been “smelling flour with my lover of the hour, defeating my nemesis and learning about what love is, and it goes both wayyyyyys”. It’s intellectual laziness, and people like you who shut down criticism of any kind are only enabling the dumbing down of our youth through your own indolence and hedonistic apathy.

FerricBadger6150

I read this entire thing in the voice of Rick Sanchez and it was hilarious.

dailybeddit2

By the way, my comment isn't about the OP itself which is a pretty harmless joke. It made me laugh because as a child I also enjoyed music that had darker lyrics than my understanding at the time. Unfortunately it has not led to any snorting coke off of dicks (yet.) My comment was more aimed at riled up redditors with Madonna-Whore complexes who think that mature themes in music is somehow a new thing.

cthoniccuttlefish

Of course they’re going to love catchy pop music when they don’t have the intellectual ability to understand the lyrics. People, especially kids, have every right to grow up and change their minds about something.

Larry-Man

People said the same thing about Elvis being too raunchy. Same with the Beatles. Apparently when girls enjoy it then we have to criticize it and now that music for girls is classic it’s all old men gatekeeping it. The only people I know who would die for the Beatles are middle aged men. I didn’t get dumber because I listened to Eminem when I was 13. I also didn’t get dumber because I listened to Spice girls or Backstreet boys when I was 11. And why are we specifically choosing young girls to make fun of? It’s not like they’re the only ones listening to raunchy music. And for the record Baby Got Back is a bop and you can’t tell me otherwise.

Dinker31

People make fun of young girls for this because young girls are the ones that dance to the music. We make fun of young boys for doing fortnite dances. It's not about the gender. It's because society always thinks the younger generation is worse than theirs.

[deleted]

Right? They’re kids. This is the stuff being marketed towards them. Let them enjoy their life while they still don’t know all the horrible things going on in the world.
