Things you dislike or just wish were different in your Golf R
By - Erogos
Cooled, memory seats. Leather seats in Texas are dangerous.
Phoenix checking in. You just learn to park the right direction, and put your sunshade up every time.
Like I never put my sunglasses in the cubby above the mirror - because pulling them out at 5pm and putting them on WILL cause 2nd-degree burns to my face!
Oh that sounds terrible lol. I should buy a sunshade though when I start driving more.
Honestly the right sunshade makes all the difference! Even with strongly tinted windows, it can be better to park \*facing\* the sun.
You want one with a foil reflective surface, that completely fills your windshield, that rolls up and is a bit thick, so it has some insulation.
YES! Almost more for the easy entrance/exit honestly though. I've already scraped up the bottom of my steering wheel via zippers and those side rivet things on jeans. -_-
I wish the electronic parking brake was manual (2017 mk7) other than that, everything's pretty great
Yea thats about all I'd say would be a good change
Off the top of my head:
* Volume knob shouldn’t spin the icon within it
* I’d kill for a sunroof
* Wish it had a power passenger seat for consistency if nothing else
* The stereo is passable but not great
* I wish CarPlay was wireless but I’ve retrofit that
* Passenger side mirror should pitch down in reverse (I know this is codable)
* Rear door handles should have keyless entry accordances
I love my car. But there’s a few things I wish were different. :)
> Wish it had a power passenger seat for consistency if nothing else
Ya know, I'm gonna disagree with this one for a sec. The grab handle to slide the passenger seat back being on the left side of the seat makes it damn convenient to slide the seat from the driver side.
What stereo do you have? I feel the Fender is way more than enough
The Fender, or whatever was stock in 2018. It's so unremarkable I don't even remember. 🤪
I think part of the problem is that I was coming off the Harmon Kardon in a 2011 BMW 335i, which was one of the best car stereos I've ever heard. 🤷🏻♂️
And I'm coming from a wrangler, and previously to that a 2001 grand Cherokee with Infinity gold's haha, so maybe that's why I'm just super happy 😂. Agreed with all your other points though.
Funny, I *almost* bought a Wrangler instead of the R, but to get a JL that I wanted was nearly impossible at the time, and it was **really** expensive.
My dad has had Wranglers on and off for most of my life, and I will always and forever love door-less and topless motoring.
Seems there's more wrangler / R owner crossover than people think. Ill be honest, the R hasn't made me miss the Wrangler one bit. But I'll own another one in my life haha. The doors and tops off is a blast, but for now the motorcycle will enable my wind in the face craving.
How do you make Car Play wireless? I like to use an Ipod in the USB slot but would like google maps/waze to be in the infotainment from my phone.
I got one of [these](http://www.amazon.com/dp/B08P1GWQDB/?tag=liismo-20) — it plugs into the standard USB port and then bridges to your phone wirelessly. Just make sure you get the one that matches your car's model year.
It isn't perfect, but it works well enough, especially since most of the time that I drive is for ~15 minutes or less.
Cool thanks I will have a look.
EU models can be specced with the sunroof but from what I hear they all leak like crazy so we're luckier to not have the option.
>I’d kill for a sunroof
I wouldn't based on all the issues the GTI and normal Golf people have with theirs.
for the millions of sunroofs sold probably just a vocal minority
For the rear doors, you just need to change this in the settings.
Sorry, what I mean is, I want to be able to grab the rear door handle to unlock the car using the proximity key. Or lock the car using the rear handle.
Apologies, misunderstood. Yes it is frustrating since I often put my kids in the back first. My base model 2018 Atlas has the rear door sensors yet my 2018 top-of-the-line Golf R doesn’t. Really strange.
Power passenger seat should be necessary, I paid 40k for the damn thing. I like no sunroof since it's a sporty car however! Stereo is great in my opinion, sub provides plenty of base and great highs too. Super intuitive touch screen on my 19
Rear door are keyless in mk7
No, you cannot unlock the door or lock the doors from the back doors.
On mine I can.
So you have the little dimple on all four handles and not just the front two? What country are you in?
I wish I had remote start and cooled seats. I also have experienced a couple small rattles from the trim around the digital cluster that I am having difficulty fixing. Other than those minor details, the car has been fantastic. (Mk7.5R)
I’m with you on the seats and the remote start.
If a 25k Hyundai has it, why can’t my 42k VW?
Water cooled exhaust manifold makes the car heat up in no time. No need to waste fuel idling your car for 5 minutes every morning.
I’d dump the “headerfold” too.
The rattles in this thing are about to drive me up the wall ('19). The first one was the instrument cluster, now I have one over on the passenger side somewhere and another just behind my head that sounds like the headliner or something. Haven't been able to get any of them to stop yet but the instrument cluster is better after I wedged a small piece of folded paper in between the top of the surround and the dash.
I've had 15 year old Hondas that rattled less than this.
Its funny you mention the headliner. I also had a rattle directly above the drivers seat in the headliner. I brought it to the dealership for that and I got a great tech who figured put some clips were not fully seated. The headliner has been rattle free ever since.
My 2011 gti was so much more solid (in terms of rattles) compared to my 19 R. Quite annoying in my opinion, despite the car being so fun to drive.
Ditto on the rattle, can’t figure out how to stop it.
I brought it to the dealership and described my exact rattle. They disagreed with my statement and said it was normal :( I think my next plan of action is going to remove the whole trim piece around the cluster and either make the clips tighter or add some foam.
My rear seat latch rattled and creaked bad but dealer fixed it in just a few moments cause they've heard it before. I haven't had any dash rattle yet on my 19. Cooled seats would be appreciated hence the price
Better clutch for those that have manuals.
Better sounding exhaust... The Mk8 sounds great.
Better stock tires than the Contis.
Larger touch screen - like two more inches than the mk7.5.
The tailpipes get pitted after 15k or so even if you are diligent in cleaning them. Really would love the MK6 placement of them too.
30 - 40 more horsepower out the box. Why make people go Stage 1?
I guess you are missing my point. The car needs 30-40 more horsepower out of the box to really wake the car up. To my point, the new MK8 has power like a stage 2 Mk7.5. VW is correcting this.
DSG version is fastest in the class 0-60. manual was an after thought and a bit slower
If you’re willing to go through with it you can get a Mk6 style rear bumper. I have fitted one on my Mk7 and I love it. Check out my posts to see
The "scare the shit out of you and your passenger" automatic panic braking when you come to a dip exiting a parking lot or your own driveway. I hate that.
Also agree that the icon shouldn't turn with volume knob, but maybe I'm just too picky. Heck, I *am* picky. That's why I bought this car!
Is this a codeable thing? I tried getting out of a parking lot 3 times and needed to use a different exit
Ok, so you need to press the car with 4 bits of a circle on, on the steering wheel. You’ll the get options for ACC and front assist, navigate to front assist and turn it off, when your done reactivate it.....if you want.
Gotcha thanks to be fair Ive only owned the car a couple of weeks
Easiest way is to turn ESC into Sport/off completely - it automatically disables front assist. Turn on ESC to reactivate.
Love my 2016 - No parking sensors, No Lane Asist, No ACC, No DCC and No digital dash. Its kind of like an old hot rod. My daily Tiguan has some of those features and they are nice but not on my weekend fun car.
I wish the engine had port as well as direct injection (I'm in USA). Heated steering wheel, cooled seats, Wireless Android auto/charger would be great.
Yup right there with! I'm in Canada and heated steering wheel would be amazing to have!
O.M.LAWD. Heated steering wheel ALL THE WAY.
Remote start, memory seats, folding mirrors (Mk7 r)
My R32 has a sunroof... It kills me that my R doesn't!
Aah the R32 set me on my life wish list for this car. Got a Golf R 6 months ago, but not sure it’s as mad as the 32. Love it in race with the individual settings set up for an easier steer
Yeah it's tough... the R is way faster and more comfortable, but I always miss that exhaust...
I never owned a 32, just used to stop and stare every time I saw one. I love my R. Catch Jamie on Officially Gassed YouTube channel. The R is mind blowing. I am far too old to enjoy this car, but boy do I have fun pushing it to the limits
Haha I’m fortunate enough to have both. The r32 is mostly garaged but it does come out on nice days. It’s a ton of fun to drive. A more visceral experience.
But not nearly as fast as my mk7
Blame the e-Golf.........
For me it would be
Heated steering wheel. Electronic passenger seats. Zero squeaks and rattles in the interior. And an over all better clutch and shifting feel, with a taller 6th gear.
I wish it came with fixed calipers like all the other cars in its class. The floating calipers provide stopping power just fine, but the ability to easily swap pads and the "look" would have been nice.
The DSG paddle shifters should be bigger and metal, the standard ones are nowhere near as good to use as aftermarket replacements. And memory seats and less soft paint.
I wish the center console opened and the usb connection for CarPlay was in there. The location under the hvac controls keeps fatiguing my cords.
I've only had my R for about a week, but these are my minor quibbles (keep in mind that I'm coming out of an X5 50i M-sport:
1. The stereo is passable, but very bland. (Wondering how the Dynaudio systems that rest of the world gets sound)
2. Proper dipping mirror in reverse. (I will probably have to install power folding mirrors to remedy this).
3. Lack of sunroof (I understand why we didn't get it, but for god sake even my old mk3 GTI-VR6 had one).
4. Backup camera quality is abysmal. (my '13 X5 makes this look like SD vs HD)
5. Proper paddles for DSG...not these plasticky bits.
6. Lack of USB or 12V power in center console, and for rear seat occupants.
7. Auto Start/Stop....why is this still a thing on a performance vehicle?
8. Why can't we have all radio presets in all one list ? (I mean FM/AM/Sirius all together)
9. Lack of spare tire is just dumb.
10. Wish we got the Performance Pack and titanium Akrapovic exhaust system that the Euro R got....come to think of it, I wish we got all of the cool stuff that they have....headlight washers, sequential tail lights, power folding mirrors, Discovery Pro 9.2" head unit.....
I'm not really bothered by the lack of remote start, or the electronic parking brake.
Otherwise, love the car so far. Surprised by how quick it is. I've always tried to get a faster car than my previous one going from an 89 Mustang GT to 98 GTI-VR6 (still miss that engine note) to 04 S4 Avant (6sp V8 manual wagon...was a rare find) to a 13 X5 50i twin turbo V8 with the M-sport and M-perf package (shockingly a near 5 sec 0-60 5,400lb missile) to the R which does not really disappoint.
The lack of folding mirrors and current gear in the dash drives me mental, especially since they’re available in the EU.
The fact that the grab handles fall apart just by looking at them.
Better wheel options beyond the standard “Englishtown” or black pretorias.
And since I live in sunny California, wish the seats would cool as well as heat, since getting into the car with black leather interior when its hot as *[email protected]# out isn’t fun.
(USA, Mk. 7.5)
For me the euro short shifter as a standard in the US.
Dipped mirrors in reverse
Heated steering wheel
Better stereo (fender is.... ok but really nothing thrilling)
Better sound insulation in the cabin
Factory rear tinted windows
Cold weather package
The damn chassis flex (MK6 issue)
The subframe clunk (MK6 issue)
Needing to monitor the cam follow (MK6 issue)
Baby ass clutch (all VW stuff)
Lol! Baby ass clutch
The new idiotic touch buttons all over the show. Really turning me off the new R
When downshifting from 3rd to 2nd the 6 speed dsg is a bit "grabby".
USA MT Mk6 here. There are a lot of people saying they wish they had a sunroof. Did the 7 and 7.5 not come with a sunroof? Anyways here's my 2.
I understand why but the engine bay is so cramped it's hard to do my own work on the car.
What I don't understand is why the ceiling mounted sunglass holder is so small. I have yet to find any pair that actually fits. I've been using it as a backup mask holder and that is even cutting it close....
No sunroof on MK7 or 7.5 in NA. They crash tested one chassis for both the e-Golf and Golf R, both have a raise rear floor that is different than GTI or base Golf.
Steering feel. Its so freaking numb.
I think the 7.5 is near perfect for me but I’d love to be able to change the driving mode from the steering wheel.
The passenger seat is narrower than the driver seat. It's the same in the GTI's as well though.
Nah …the driver’s seat is more worn in. 😆
Sunroof and wireless CarPlay.
Wondering if the new MIB3 unit is a direct swap for the MIB2?
Not really enjoying the automatic?
Automatic passenger seat, it’s just a nice little feature that should’ve been included and auto folding mirrors would be a nice touch.
I’ve since sold my 19 R but my biggest complaint was never finding a comfortable seating position. Loved the car but I never quite got comfortable in it.
I have had mine since February and have felt the exact same thing! I came from an F-150 and had no trouble getting comfortable in it and I attributed the lack of comfort in the R to an adjustment period coming from such a big, roomy vehicle.
But no matter whether I drop the seat as low as it goes, on an angle, slightly higher…no position is all that comfortable.
Yeah, it’s a tiny bit frustrating. I don’t have an answer for you, unfortunately.
* Fix the occasional electric issues (backup camera, driver window, radio)
* More front camber without resorting to camber plates
* Manual hand brake
* Ability to shift into neutral by holding both paddles (dsg)
* Front lsd
* Larger seat bolsters
I do not love my 6MT's clutch, but this isn't a new or original observation. Other than that, WHERE THE HELL IS MY CENTER CONSOLE, VW? HUH? WHERE?
Sorry. That's been bugging me for awhile now. Never realized just how much I used my Beetle TDI's center console until I traded in for a Golf R.
The seatbelt latch placement 😡
If I could add anything I'd add:
- Able to go into neutral holding both paddles
- Heated steering wheel
- The ability to use Rain-x windshield washer fluid without breaking the car (wtf is wrong with German engineers and their garbage sensor design?)
I'd say better paddles but I already replaced them with overpriced and oversized carbon fiber ones from ECS.
Wireless AA also sounds appealing, but honestly the charge my Pixel 5 gets just driving to and from daycare during the week allows me to only plug in my phone in the house to charge it on the weekend at most which is nice. I seem to always be between 30-70% charge otherwise.
Heated steering wheel.
Would love upgraded exhaust system, but otherwise love my 7.5
Might want to try CTS Turbo resonator delete. No drone. Just a bit more tone inside with valves closed. Moderately more rumble inside with valves open and louder DSG farts. Much better sounding externally in both settings. It stays just well behaved enough inside that it doesn't piss off my wife or our toddler when valves are open around town.
I've really enjoyed it on mine, should've come this way from the factory. Somewhat subtle but solid improvement.
I am the wife lol! More DSG farts is def what I’m after so thanks for the recommendation.
Hubby drives a 1L Clio, so you get the driving dynamics in our house
2.5 L 5 cylinder Daza engine coming standard for all R models. I would of paid the premium 100%
Also, if it hasn't been said already, the fucking spare tire kit and center console. That should of been included.
- Would prefer that it didn't smell of coolant after I parked it in my garage.
- Sometimes the phone does not connect properly, or pandora is silent. Easy fix - disconnect and reconnect the phone, but I shouldn't have to do that.
- I wish the seat wound back a bit or the wheel moved up a bit when the driver door opens like some fancier cars, because sometimes I feel like I'm falling slightly backwards when I get out of the car and I find myself leaning on the B pillar to steady myself.
I hate the auto-hold so I permanently turned it off. It was great in my Mk6 because it would detect if the car was going uphill and only engage then. The Mk7 just always holds even when going downhill.
Sunroof would be great. heated steering wheel. spare tire for sure. I think sound system is great. I also think R is cool, TT is cute.
I wish it didn't yell at me every time it's 39 degrees out.
Even the low gas notification, why are the so loud. Scares me every time.
Soundaktor ( even the concept of it, mine is disabled)
Bluetooth to head unit is inconsistent
Electronic parking brake
All minor niggles, I love this car!
Mk7.5 UK. Programmable button on the steering wheel in place of the voice button.
The Haldex sucks for any kind of performance driving except 1/4 mile basically. XDS+ doesn't do anything useful to help it. I wish it actually had mechanical differentials at both ends so badly and I wouldn't have to spend like $14k to do them myself.
I wish my '15 were a Variant (wagon), with the '16 infotainment system.
And I wish it had the "Homelink" (built-in garage door opener).
Beyond that, it's hard to complain about anything. Anything else I would complain about would make the car worse if changed.
EDIT: oh, wait, there is one thing that drives me bonkers!! The parking assist. First, it always covers half the screen when I am in reverse, when I really want to see the entire backup camera. Then, it beeps about stuff in front of me, when I am backing up!!! I hate hate hate hate the idiocy that is '15 VW parking assist.
The tach and the speedo are in the wrong places. They should be swapped. Like the older cars were so the tach is in the drivers direct sight line.
And a manual parking brake yes that too. Other than those two little things its amazing
I wish it looked as good as it drives.
I sold my 2011 TTS for this, and everyone basically says the same thing:
The Golf R is *cute*; the Audi was *sexy*.
Don't get me wrong: I love the balance of performance and practicality. And there's probably not a way to actually make a sleek, sexy looking hatchback.
But we all want what we can't have.
